Hello Again

Welcome to our Great Musical Adventure with 'ESL Songs'.

On this page we are going to listen to Chris De Burgh, another great artist like Neil Diamond who produced loads of terrific music that can be used as instructional 'ESL songs'.

If you have not yet finished the first lesson in this preparatory course then go back to the first ESL Songs page and pay attention to the instructions carefully.

You can listen to 500 English songs and learn very little or you can listen to 500 English songs and develop an ear for English and gain everything there is to be gained from the experience.

Listen to each song as many times as it takes you to learn it.

Use the power of repetition. It is how language is learned. Listen to the songs over and over so you imprint the correct grammar automatically.

We need repeat exposure to new material in order to accomplish in depth learning. We need to listen over and over again otherwise new words are quickly forgotten.

Following our method you will know and understand the ESL songs at such a deep level they will become a part of you and you will in time use the vocabulary spontaneously.

The sample English song that has been chosen for this demonstration exercise is a song by Chris De Burgh called "A spaceman came traveling".

You do not need to learn this song. It is an example of a song that will appear later in the course. When you get there it will no longer look difficult as you will have acquired so much of the vocabulary that only a few words will need clarification.

This is not a literal and straight forward song like in the previous example although it can be interpreted that way...

This is the type of song that would come much later in the course because it is metaphorical.

Songs often mean different things to different people so don't be too concerned about what songs mean to others. If you can find out what a song means to you, you are on the right track.

Some songs have a cultural basis and if you do not have that knowledge you will not understand that song in the same way as someone who does.

So make the songs personal. What would a song like this mean to you?

ESL Song Lyrics for A Spaceman Came Traveling by Chris De Burgh

A spaceman came traveling on his ship from afar

'Twas light years of time since his mission did start

And over a village he halted his craft

And it hung in the sky like a star

Just like a star

He followed a light and came down to a shed

Where a mother and child were lying there on a bed

A bright light of silver shone round his head

And he had the face of an angel

And they were afraid

Then the stranger spoke

He said "Do not fear

I come from a planet a long way from here

And I bring a message for mankind to hear"

And suddenly the sweetest music filled the air

And it went la la la la la

Peace and goodwill to all men

And love for the child

This lovely music went trembling through the ground

And many were wakened on hearing that sound

And travelers on the road

The village they found

by the light of that ship in the sky

Which shone all around

And just before dawn

At the paling of the sky

The stranger returned and said " Now I must fly

When two thousand years of your time has gone by

This song will begin once again, to a baby's cry"

And it went la la la la la..

This song will begin once again

And it goes la la la la la...

Peace and goodwill to all men

And love for the child

Oh the whole world is waiting

Waiting to hear the song again

There are thousands standing on the edge of the world

And a star is moving somewhere

The time is nearly here

This song will begin once again

To a baby's cry...

Now lets take a few notes on Learning English with ESL Songs.

1. We have said the more senses you employ in a learning situation the faster and easier it is to retain the new information. Introduce the tactile sense of touch and pick up a pen and write out some ESL song lyrics or the meanings of any new and unfamiliar words. Create new sentences with words that you are learning.

2. We learn by repetition, being exposed to these ESL Songs over and over again, so make listening to them part of your everyday experience.

3. Make it personal. What does this song mean to you? How do you understand this song? What do you think the song means?

4. What is the goal? The goal is to be able to read or sing the song with the correct pronunciation; to understand what the song means to you and to do it without using a dictionary, video or translation software.

Remember, what you put into life is what you get out. The only way to do a course is to do it properly and that is what we are preparing you for here. Success !

I think we are nearly done.
