At the age of nine, Joni contracted polio and was sent to hospital where she was told she would never walk again. This is where she started singing; in a hospital bed singing Christmas carols. Fortunately she recovered and in her teenage years taught herself to play the ukulele and the guitar. Joni left art college in 1964 and told her mother she was going to Toronto to become a folk singer. In 1965 she married the folk singer Chuck Mitchell and took his name. Joni Mitchell became famous during the 1970's and is considered one of the greatest female recording artists of the 20th century. Her music evolved from deeply personal folk styles into pop and jazz. She won a Grammy award in 2002 for a lifetime achievement. Notes 1. Install the iTunes software.
